For those of you who can’t make it, we’ll be going LIVE on Instagram so be sure to follow us and tune in.
LS: Hi Rachel. Can you tell us a little bit about your career as a matchmaker + dating and relationship coach?
RR: Its pretty wild, but my entire adult career has been about helping people find and keep love! For the last thirteen years, since I finished my undergraduate psychology degree, I have been working as a matchmaker and dating & relationship coach in NYC. This has led me to all sorts of unique opportunities. I’ve been on TV shows and radio interviews as a dating expert, co-hosted all kinds of events for singles, wrote two books, countless blogs-including a reality dating blog in which I went on ninety two dates in a year-and got all kinds of people in relationships and marriages. I have worked with everyone from NFL players to seventy-year old single women on the Upper East Side. Yes, I met Patti Stanger. I have created training programs for matchmakers from all over the world and taught them at a matchmaking school. I have seen it all!
LS: Upon receiving your psychology degree, how did you realize you wanted to be a relationship/Love expert?
RR: I totally fell into the love industry! I responded to a Craigslist ad for a position with a startup matchmaking company in Manhattan–before I even knew matchmaking was a profession. Who knew it wasn’t just “a thing” but a billon dollar industry? I did always know I wanted to help people and that I loved love! That is why I majored in psychology–
with plans to be a therapist. Before I even started my graduate Marriage & Family Therapy program, I was already working as a matchmaker. I did complete my degree and over eight hundred clinical hours, but things were taking off so much with the matchmaking, that I decided to stick with it for a while. Fast forward thirteen years, and here I am…..
LS: And here you are… with Love Squad! That’s great. Can you tell us what Love is?
RR: EVERYTHING! It’s the one thing-that changes everything– that nearly everyone wants–even when they think they don’t want it at all.
LS: The saying, “Love makes the world go ’round,” holds true then. How can you help our readers recognize real love from fake love?
RR: Real love endures. It does not walk out when the going gets tough, because it is not conditional. It pulls up a chair, rolls up its sleeves, and works things the **** out. Fake love is there for the party, but it isn’t willing to clean up afterward and deal with the inconveniences. It isn’t willing to be vulnerable. It doesn’t recognize what it has, so it just peaces out.
LS: Okay that seems simple enough! So how/when do we know that parter is serious about the relationship?
RR: We know when someone is serious, because they show us-with their actions- that we are a priority in their life. We feel that they genuinely care, and we don’t have to second guess everything. It is really as simple as that.
LS: We like simple! Can you share your favorite piece of advice for our readers out there and their relationships?
RR: When it comes to relationships, be: All or Nothing! I learned this lesson the hard way. All or nothing was always my true nature, but unfortunately, I fell for a guy or two who liked grey area. Never again! In my opinion, the only way to be in a relationship is all-in!
LS: Yes, no grey areas please! Be all or nothing. What would you advise for those going on a first date? Should we still be all in?
RR: Be yourself, but be kind. If yourself isn’t kind, just be kind! Ha. If you aren’t feeling a romantic connection, don’t lead your date on. Don’t be rude to him or her either. Respect that he or she is another human being who put him/herself out there for an opportunity to connect romantically and is probably just as (or even more) disappointed than you that things aren’t working out. You can help make the (dating!) world a better place, by just being polite and not ghosting someone. It will be good karma for you too.
LS: Great points! Are you currently accepting dating, relationship, and image coaching clients? Do I have to live in NYC to work with you?
RR: Absolutely–and you can live anywhere! If you are in NYC or the tri-state area, I’d love to meet you face-to-face. For those out of area, I can also do Skype, FaceTime, phone sessions, and potentially travel to you. Note: I have a passport, and I am not afraid to use it.
